Optimising antiviral coverage to minimise hospitalisation and death in people with COVID-19

Project aims
Timely access to antivirals in primary care requires awareness of their availability by both patient and treating doctor. Although there are some data on prescribing oral antivirals in residential aged care facilities, patterns of utilisation and coverage are not systematically tracked. Using routinely collected data, we aim to estimate and describe oral antiviral dispensing patterns over time. In this way, it will be possible to identify gaps in COVID-19 antiviral treatment in eligible patients.
The specific objectives of this project are:
- to estimate the proportion of oral antiviral prescriptions at national level and by provider jurisdiction disaggregated by drug
- to estimate the proportion of the population who were prescribed oral antivirals by provider jurisdiction disaggregated by drug and key eligible group
- to estimate and compare the proportion of oral antiviral prescriptions by provider jurisdiction disaggregated by socioeconomic disadvantage and remoteness.
