Project aims

This project aims to investigate the coverage, timeliness of initiation and effectiveness of COVID-19 antivirals at a population level and in key eligible groups.

Comparisons of coverage by different characteristics including  disadvantage and remoteness will be made.

Project key research areas

Systematic review of the literature

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials and observational studies is investigating the effectiveness of oral COVID-19 antivirals on risk of hospitalisation or death in people who are vaccinated and infected with an Omicron variant.

Analysis of routinely collected data sources for antiviral effectiveness

An analysis of large-scale linked routinely collected data  on COVID-19 diagnoses, antiviral prescriptions and outcomes will be made using available data sources. This analysis will use either the national COVID-19 Register managed by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare or the Person-level Integrated Data Asset managed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The project will investigate the utility of these routinely collected data to monitor COVID-19 antiviral effectiveness over time.
